Program -- Process Manufacturing Track
Achieving World Class Manufacturing 10:00 a.m. -- 11:00 a.m. Find out how Miller Brewing Company's Milwaukee Brewery utilizes its continuous improvement strategy, "World Class Manufacturing," to increase its operations' speed and flexibility. Speaker Andrew Moschea, Plant Manager –
Milwaukee Brewery, Miller Brewing Co.
Andrew Moschea is the Brewery Plant Manager for Miller Brewing Company's historic Milwaukee Brewery, the oldest large operating brewery in the U.S. He is responsible for all facets of operations to brew, package and ship more than 7 million barrels of beer annually. In this role, Moschea oversees 700 employees in 77 discrete buildings on 82 acres. Moschea is in the process of leading the implementation of World Class Manufacturing processes in the brewery, driving cultural change and real performance improvements. Prior to his role as Brewery Plant Manager, Moschea was the Director of Corporate Operations for Miller. In that role he led the development of a company-wide transportation strategy that set the stage for to Miller assume greater influence on its supply chain through additional control of outbound transportation. In addition, Moschea worked on other critical operational initiatives and strategies. Continuous Improvement in Process Manufacturing 11:15 a.m. -- 12:15 p.m. Speaker Neal Simon, Continuous Improvement
Manager, General Mills, Inc.
Neal Simon is the Continuous Improvement Leader for General Mills Manufacturing organization. He has 5 years of manufacturing experience with the soybean processing industry prior to 15 years in the food manufacturing industry with General Mills. For the last 10 years, Simon has been involved in Continuous Improvement implementations within General Mills. In his most recent role Neal is leading Continuous Improvement efforts across all 40 domestic facilities with support for the General Mills international and joint venture sites. Lean Transformation in a Process Industry 2:00 p.m. -- 3:00 p.m. DTE Energy has been on the lean transformation journey since 2000. Striving to be among the first major utilities to implement lean has been both rewarding and challenging. From an application standpoint, the lean toolkit needs to be translated to fit the operating context of this industry. From a change management perspective, creating a compelling vision and case for change requires creative approaches as there are no peers to directly benchmark. To conquer these challenges, DTE Energy put in place a support organization that took a holistic view of the lean transformation roadmap. This presentation will detail how the DTE Energy Operating System has been built including the efforts to engage the leadership team through the front-line organization. Case studies of high leverage projects will also be presented to demonstrate how the lean toolkit can apply to process industries. Speaker Shawn Patterson, Director,
Resource Management, DTE Energy
Shawn Patterson is the director of resource management in the distribution operations business unit at DTE Energy. In his current role, Patterson is responsible for resource planning and schedule coordination for major system construction, reliability programs, and reactive maintenance from system trouble. He also oversees contractor strategy for over $200M in external spend. Patterson has spent over eight years at DTE Energy. In his prior assignment he was the director of regional operations managing all overhead, underground, and substation field personnel. Patterson came to DTE Energy to lead the utility company's implementation of a lean operating system. He served as the director of the operating system strategy group to develop and implement a comprehensive lean transformation for DTE Energy. Prior to joining DTE Energy, Patterson spent a number of years in various operations assignments at General Motors. He also held a number of engineering roles. In his final assignment at GM, he worked as an internal consultant for GM's Competitive Operations team which was responsible for benchmarking and deploying state of the art lean concepts. In this assignment, Patterson became an avid student of the Toyota Production System which continues to be a great passion for him. Patterson holds masters' in business administration and mechanical engineering from MIT. He has a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Patterson currently sits on the Council of Trustees for the Society of Organizational Learning. Achieving Operational Excellence to Improve Quality and Produce Higher Yields, Faster Throughput and Less Waste 3:15 p.m. -- 4:15 p.m. Wyeth uses several techniques to achieve operational excellence and we will discuss both Quality by Design (QBD) and continual advancements in Lean Manufacturing. Quality by Design (QBD) is a proactive process for mitigating risk through the multi-dimensional analysis of all input variables and process parameters that can affect quality. The QBD initiative uses emerging techniques such as Process Analytical Technology (PAT) to analyze and manage all critical sources of variability -- including materials, manufacturing processes, environmental conditions and other factors. In this way, product quality can be accurately and reliably predicted. Lean Manufacturing is a one business initiative that we'd like to highlight and give real-world examples to showcase how to enhance quality and reduce waste in manufactured products. Its core value is to do more with less: less time, inventory, space, labor and money. The basic idea is to reduce costs systematically, throughout the product and production process, by means of a series of process reviews that simplify procedures and speed up production. Each of the plants has mounted its own Lean implementation initiative that enjoys a high level of local ownership and support. Speaker Louis Schmukler, Senior Vice
President - Pharmaceutical Operating Unit, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
Louis Schmukler is the senior vice president of the TO&PS Pharmaceutical operating unit at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Schmukler is responsible for overseeing global manufacturing operations that support the company's pharmaceutical products. Schmukler joined Wyeth in 2004. Prior to his current role he was vice president, site operations for Wyeth's Pearl River campus, which encompasses R&D, biotech and consumer healthcare operations. He also had responsibility for the global Technical Operations & Product Supply Operational Excellence program. Prior to joining Wyeth, Schmukler worked in various capacities in the areas of manufacturing, quality management, supply chain management, technical services and engineering at Novartis, Hoffmann - La Roche, Marion Merrill Dow and Mallinckrodt. Schmukler graduated from Temple School of Pharmacy where he earned a bachelor's in Pharmacy. He also holds a master's in management from Webster University. He has held various leadership roles in PhRMA and the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers. Actual Conference speakers, topics, and sessions may have differed slightly from this listing.
