About The Plant

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's 448,750-square-foot facility began operations in April 2003, taking over production duties from the Journal pressroom located at 333 W. State St. The facility, which once housed a defunct factory, was transformed into a modern printing plant with the installation of more efficient building systems and printing technologies.

Journal Sentinel Inc. publishes the flagship Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper as well as a range of other print and electronic products, primarily serving the people and businesses of southeast Wisconsin. Journal Sentinel is committed to producing a newspaper that reflects the ever-changing world and fulfills the needs of readers and advertisers. In addition to the daily and Sunday newspaper, Journal Sentinel produces Web products and services through its Journal Interactive division, including JSOnline.com and PackerInsider.com. The company also offers direct mail and database marketing services, and the addition of a new printing facility in 2003 led to Journal Sentinel's recent entry to the business of commercial printing, such as the regional edition of USA Today.

Continuous Improvement in Action

Tour participants will get a behind the scenes look into the production facility where three printing presses stand five stories tall on the production floor. Collectively, the presses weigh more than 4 million pounds and are capable of churning out 85,000 copies of a 64-page newspaper in an hour. But to operate at high speed, humidity and temperature must remain constant. Building systems work together to keep the production equipment performing at optimum levels.
  • To conserve energy, traditional gas-powered steam generators are replaced with a humidification system to keep humidity levels between 55 and 58 percent.
  • A press cooling system keeps the temperature between 72 and 76 degrees.
  • New compressors, used for heat recovery, make intelligent decisions to draw in or push out outside air to maintain warehouse temperature.
  • Three 600 ton chillers and four 7 million BTU boilers maintain comfortable temperatures while providing 100 percent redundancy.
  • A Metasys system controls all of the building automation functions.
Always striving to increase energy and plant efficiency, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel production plant is constantly evaluating its facility to find ways to become more efficient.
